Water runs through our bodies like rivers, helping to keep us energetic, healthy, and lively while supporting important organ function. The kidneys and the liver, in particular, rely on water to help them filter and flush toxins from the body. Also, the urine removes a majority of waste in our system.

When we detox, the body quickly processes free-radicals to eliminate them. Throughout this process, the body uses a considerable amount of hydration and electrolytes, which the body’s natural stores must replenish. While drinking water regularly throughout the day is a good habit, people looking to detox should stay extra hydrated. Doing so will support healthy organ function and assist in flushing toxins and waste built up in the body. 

Tips for Increasing Hydration

Set A Water Alarm

Setting the alarm or reminder is an excellent way to stay on track and hydrated throughout the day. Set the alarm for every two hours. Then, when the alarm goes off, stop whatever you’re doing, and enjoy a cool glass of water. This method is one of the easiest ways to acquire new drinking patterns and ultimately tracks the amount of water drunk. 

Eat Your Water

Most things contain water, including plenty of foods many probably enjoy. If detoxing and want to amp up the hydration game, combine drinking plenty of water with eating water-rich foods. Food items that are excellent for hydration include:

Flavor Your Water 

Plain water can get a little boring, especially when consuming large amounts to support detox. Adding flavor to water is an easy way to make the experience a little more exciting since you will be changing your beverage’s flavor profile. Stay clear of sugary additives like Mio and Kool-Aid. 

Go the natural route and infuse water with fruits and herbs. Cucumber and mint, melon, strawberries, blueberries, lemons, limes, grapefruit, kiwi, and other sweet and sour fruits make great water additions. When left to sit for a few hours in the crisp fridge, the fruits can infuse a whole pitcher with delicious flavor.

Take a Water Bottle With You

When out and about, it is easy to grab a coffee, soda, or some other beverage that tastes good but doesn’t do much for hydration. To ensure adequate water levels to support detox – even while at work, at school, or running errands – try carrying a reusable water bottle. Remember if you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated so being prepared with a water bottle allows continuous drinking.

Start the Day with a Tall Glass of Water

Start the day off right by pouring a tall glass of water. Water in the morning is not only an excellent way to stay hydrated, but it also helps kickstart your metabolism, settling your stomach for the day ahead. Add lemon, cucumber, or mint leaves to morning water, making it more exciting. However, be sure to avoid ice-cold water early in the morning, ultimately avoiding shocking your system.
